Emerald Color Grading: Levels of Green in Emeralds

Emerald, a member of the beryl gemstone family, stands as one of its most distinguished representatives. Alongside diamonds, rubies, and sapphires, emerald is hailed as one of the "Four Precious Gemstones" in the realm of jewelry. Its unrivaled green hue, often described as "Emerald Green," bestows a unique and unparalleled beauty upon it. Revered as a heavenly gift, emerald is a symbol of luck and happiness and serves as the birthstone for May.

Emerald Color

The color of emerald is determined by its chromophores, with chromium and vanadium being the primary contributing elements. When electrons surrounding these chromophores absorb a portion of visible light, it imparts the gemstone with its distinctive green color. Given that emeralds often have numerous inclusions and internal fractures, most emeralds exhibit less-than-ideal clarity. Consequently, the color of emeralds can vary from a rich, soothing green to a more transparent appearance, depending on factors like clarity and cut. These differences in style are a result of the combined influence of clarity and cutting techniques on the emerald's color. emerald color

Furthermore, emerald color can be enhanced through the infusion of colorless oils, which serve to improve the gemstone's brightness and transparency by masking internal fractures. This is a physical treatment that doesn't alter the intrinsic color of the emerald but enhances its overall visual appeal.

How is the color of emeralds graded?

In the grading system for emeralds, colors are classified into several categories:

  1. Intensive Green:This is the highest grade in emerald color. Intensive green emeralds possess the deepest green color, without becoming overly opaque or overly colored. They also exhibit excellent brilliance.
  2. Vivid Green: Vivid green emeralds have a vibrant green color slightly lighter than Intensive Green but are highly sought after for their intense hue.
  3. Deep Green: Deep green emeralds are rich green and popular due to their color saturation, although they may be slightly less vibrant than Intensive Green.
  4. Medium Green: Medium green emeralds offer a balanced color that is neither too dark nor too light and typically has very good brilliance. The saturation of these emeralds falls between 50% to 70%.
  5. Soft Green: Softer than Medium Green, Soft Green emeralds have a saturation level between 20% to 40%. These emeralds still exhibit very good to excellent brilliance.emerald color
